In brief: In March 2026, MOSAIK-FLOOR outfitted a refurbished dojo for the town hall of Saint-Genis-les-Ollières, in the Rhône department: 200 m² of 5-cm-thick blue and yellow non-slip tatami mats laid over a 3-cm-thick foam underlay, and 45 linear meters of adhesive wall protection. The client’s only requirement was that the products comply with French regulations and the requirements of the French Judo Federation, with tatami mats meeting the EN 12503-3 standard. The installation was completed in 48 hours by two installers.

The Initial Need

The municipality was renovating its dojo: wooden roof structure, repainted walls, bare floor. It needed to be equipped with a complete judo area, with only one strict requirement: materials that complied with French regulations and the requirements of the French Judo Federation—specifically, EN 12503-3-certified tatami mats and wall protection around the entire perimeter of the room.

The Selected Solution

The installation was done in three layers, according to the plans provided by the municipality. First, 3-cm-thick shock-absorbing foam panels were laid across the entire surface to cushion falls and absorb impact. On top of that, 200 m² of 5-cm-thick, 200 x 100 cm non-slip tatami mats, with a density of 230 kg/m³ and a blue and yellow rice-straw vinyl surface, were installed as a floating floor directly on the foam: their non-slip backing is sufficient to hold them in place without any fasteners. Finally, 45 linear meters of wall protection were glued to the walls. The entire installation was completed in 48 hours by two installers, resulting in a dojo ready to welcome judokas.

The Club's Return

The members of the judo club gave enthusiastic feedback on their new dojo, both in terms of its appearance and the comfort of training there.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Construction Project

What are the standards for judo mats in a municipal dojo?

The tatami mats must comply with the EN 12503-3 standard and the requirements of the French Judo Federation. That was the only firm requirement set by the municipality for this dojo.

Do you need an underlay beneath judo mats?

On a hard floor, yes: here, 3-cm-thick sheets of shock-absorbing foam were laid beneath 200 m² of 5-cm-thick tatami mats to cushion falls and absorb impact.

Are the tatami mats glued to the floor?

No. The non-slip tatami mats are installed as a floating floor directly on top of the foam: their non-slip backing is enough to keep them in place without any fasteners.

When are wall protectors needed in a dojo?

As soon as the edge of the carpet is within 100 cm of a wall or obstacle. In Saint-Genis-les-Ollières, 45 linear meters of wall protection were installed around the perimeter.
